Editing process

Editing !!!

After filming for three days in various parts of around the Laines we started editing as a group to ensemble all of our clips together through Adobe premier. We didn't find it that hard to edit as we more or less had the same vision of what we wanted everything to look like , I'd say we worked cohesively !! However not everyone in our group could attend all the time which made things frustrating, putting that aside we worked , tweaked and manipulated our clips until it resembled our vision.

Shot List

Camera shot list !

We know that there are three shot types we NEED to include for our documentary modes to be delivered properly ......

LONG SHOTS !

MID SHOTS !

CLOSE UP'S !

CUT AWAYS !

Long shots allow a lot of the frame to display buildings as well as people which is important if we want to include an establishing shot of  'The Laines'

Mid shots are vital for our interviews , this way our audience will still get to see their style yet still get to see the flurry or lack of activity behind them.

Close up's are used to show an up, close and personal profile of an item or person , we were thinking of using this to highlight or give meaning to something the narrator has state.

Cut aways are essential to keep the audiences interests alive , if we just showed the full interview clip without any cut away of shots of people shopping or fashion items then the documentary would drag and lose peoples interest.

Main Speaker - Anton Spreckley

We managed to get an interview with the owner of the vintage store 'Rob the Dog' Anton Spreckley, as a group we came to the conclusion that our documentary needed a 'voice of authority' that would tie and link everything in our documentary together. Soon after we met him we got to know his animated character and his openly opinionated personality and thought that he would be perfect for what we wanted to show or emphasise.

Initial questions we thought of before hand

Narrative & Themes

After watching the mini documentary 'Pockets' my group and I started thinking about our themes and we came up these three...

  1. Individuality
  2. Fashion
  3. Vintage

The angle we chose our documentary to head towards was 'The Laines' and how it enables certain individuals to express their true self through clothes. In my opinion the high street shops are very main stream and the clothes are mass produced thus meaning there's a high probability that more than one person will have the same item. The Laines on the other hand have 'one of a kind' pieces from different time periods that might have 'gone out of fashion'. The fact that the Laines gives people the chance to purchase and re-event these timeless pieces I believe is slightly more interesting than doing something 'commercial'.

Narrative - We want our narrative to explore the quirky fashion sense of a few fashion conscious people in Brighton.

Film inspiration

'Pockets' - Film Inspiration

This short film clip was shown to me and it instantly made me think about .......

  1. Visuals
  2. Interviews
  3. Music & Sound
  4. Shot types
  5. Documentary structures
  6. Narrative

After watching it I felt inspired to start planning the points above for my documentary and to make it so it reached the quality and standard of the above clip.

Music inspiration

Music Inspiration

My groups music inspiration came about after our first two days of filming in the Laines. When looking through our footage we picked up on some diegetic sound in a few of our clips that we thought would fit perfectly with the pace of our documentary and sum up the mood of the Laines.

Using this app we were then able to identify what the music was, find it and then use it as inspiration for when our editing process began.

1)  Ole Sonny Boy - Blues and Misery

2) Baby Boy Warren- Sanafee ( not welcome anymore)

Influences

Influences

Before I started this project I can honestly say that I was only influenced by the memories of all the cool people & places I had previously seen around Brighton. However the more my group and I discussed who could possibly be in our documentary the more my influences became clear.

After managing to get these contacts for our documentary my group and I were motivated and influenced to think where filming should take place and what we would need to include in our frame and shots so that it matched our interviewees aesthetic .

Readings - Documentary style

*Documentary Modes*

http://aliceyoudd.blogspot.co.uk/       <--- Here's a blog I found that helped me get to grips with the                                                                          different documentary modes found in the readings

Expository & poetic were the two documentary modes that I thought my groups documentary would show. The reason for these two modes are clear !

From these two online definitions I came to the conclusion that 'Anton Spreckley' would be our voice of God and make our documentary expository while the cut aways of the Laines and interviewees would add meaning to what was being spoken about throughout using 'poetical manipulation.'

Initial Idea + Research

Brighton Fashion (In the Laines)

ICSUN5 on Make A Gif, Animated Gifs

When I first came into Brighton one of the first things I noticed was how full of character the town is, in particular the North Laines. When I got given the task of thinking of an idea for my documentary I walked around BOTH the high street shops and the quirky little vintage stores and wrote observation notes down.

After being put into a group with: Camilla, Elliot, Claudia and David we decided that angling it more towards the Laines was a better option ......

Group Documentary Title : The Laines,  Brighton Fashion.
